Show @ The Anza Club - Vancouver
October 22, 2014
David Vertesi played third at The Anza Club Wednesday night, preceded by Windmills and Rosie June. Currently working on a follow up to his first solo album, Cardiography, we were excited to see how the Hey Ocean! band member had created his own unique identity. Happily, we were impressed by what we heard.
Vertesi’s music has a raw emotionality to it, that speaks a lot to love and relationships, all tucked together by punchy, surf-rock instrumentation. Self-proclaimed “cruise ship” music, Vertesi’s songs pulled us back into summer, despite the downpour outside. As for the show itself, Vertesi and his backup band had a good connection with the audience, encouraging them to get up and dance. His energy was welcomed after a somewhat uneventful performance by the talented, but incredibly shy, Rosie June. Vertesi's dynamics were good, having audiences dancing one moment, and cooling it to a sway the next. A clear favourite was the Spice Girls cover, Say You’ll Be There.
Overall, a great show and a great start to a solo career. We look forward to what’s next.
