May 27, 2017 - @ The Commodore Ballroom, Vancouver

By Morgan Berna

The night kicked off with a set by Astrocolor, who are self-described as, “...recalling the Chemical Brothers, Air, and St. Germain. The band plays on the edges of funky house, Balearic, breakbeat, and ambient.” And the description really says it all.

Their set had an ambient, house feel with live instrumentals. Their sound is smooth and full of soul. The tracks were soothing, heavy and perfect to dance to on the giant Commodore dance-room.

The energy continued to grow as Five Alarm Funk took the stage. The countless instruments on stage had me excited.

Five Alarm Funk is an eight man band who’ve now released six albums, their latest being “Sweat” available now.

Between the costume changes, shark battles, and a baffling special on Bacardi Breezers - I was ready to hit the dance-floor.

The excitement with their set builds as the set goes on and their sing-along style lyrics help keep the crowd engaged. My friend says it best, “This is the perfect ski band.” And they are. It would be a perfect band to see on a rowdy night out with your best friends.

If you’re looking for a good, messy night make sure you see Five Alarm Funk when they’re in your city next!
