Raw emotion and heartbreak are something every artist wishes to be able to capture in the height of their craft. With a soul-shattering voice, Jessie Reyez drums up images of an angst filled day after a breakup in her new single Figures.
The track is reminiscent of a woman scorned to lengths of Alanis Morissette's’ You Oughta Know and provides the listener with a surreal experience throughout.
A stripped down sense of instrumentation highlights Reyez’s voice; with absolutely no drum track throughout the song, heavy bass punctuates each line and bring more body and groove to the song. A classic and old soul R&B vibe oozes from the opening line of “I gave you ride or die and you gave me games,” to the end of the song. You can hear heartbreak in her voice as Reyez reaches the choruses of the song with an imperfect and growling timbre to her delivery.
A song perfect for hating your ex after a breakup or just when you feel vindictive; Reyez takes listeners on a journey through a woman’s life when she wants them to know that she was the best thing that happened to them.
A Canadian artist to watch out for, Jessie Reyez brings her A-game to this new single.
