THE ZOLAS - MOLOTOV GIRLS

Released June 2, 2015

By Rose Morris

There are so many things to like about The Zolas new single, Molotov Girls. First off, I have a soft spot for songs with lyrics from the perspective of the opposite gender of the vocalist. Because we need more gender-bending up in this world.

Second, who doesn’t love a good protest song? Molotov Girls makes reference to recent riots in Russia and the Ukraine, female activists such as Pussy Riot and generally supports Riot Grrrl culture.

It’s wonderful to hear a song about feminist activism and real-world issues that is also entirely radio-friendly. This isn’t just a politically-charged protest anthem, it’s a full-on club banger. This single is poppy and completely danceable; being super accessible with its New Wave-inspired synth and silky, sexy indie-rock vocals. I wouldn’t be at all surprised to see Molotov Girls become a popular dancefloor-filler, and I, for one, would love to see a club full of young women singing “so tired of being told to keep polite” at the top of their lungs.
